Last fall my husband and I decided to build a new home in the Briarwood area of Billings. We knew the house would be a challenge because of its location on the side of a small hill and quality of the soil in Briarwood. We also knew, based on houses we had lived in previously, how we wanted our new home to look and feel upon completion.

It has been our good fortune to work with Tim McFadden on the construction of not one but two of our personal residences. We first worked with Tim in 1993 when we hired Jeff Junkert Construction and Tim was assigned to be the Product Manager/Construction Supervisor on the building of our home in Wilshire Heights in Billings. We lived in that house for 12 years and were very happy with it. The entire crew that Tim supervised was exceptionally talented. They weren’t just carpenters, they were craftsmen.
When we decided to relocate to Red Lodge last year (2005), we interviewed 4 or 5 builders and got bids from all of them. By this time, Tim had created his own company, so we asked him to bid on our project.
McFadden Construction’s bid was within the range of all he others but the thing that appealed to us was the way Tim structured his costs and did his monthly billing. Plus, we had a good feeling about Tim before, and everywhere we went in Billings, people said, “That Tim McFadden is as honest as the day is long.” So we picked Tim.
In terms of cost, everything was understood up front and there were never any surprises. We met with Tim each month and paid the bills regularly. He kept an amazing number of details in his head and always knew who had billed what amount and what each charge was, for example, even when one vendor delivered two loads of gravel for different purposes three weeks apart.
When the heavy equipment people broke ground around the Fourth of July, Tim told us we’d be done around the end of January. We moved into our home January 31. Throughout the construction process, Tim kept track of his subs better than a grizzly sow keeps track of her cubs. And he is a LOT nicer than a grizzly. If we noticed something that someone had forgotten or had left partially completed, by the time we brought it to Tim’s attention, he had already notified the sub in charge.
This is not to say that the project didn’t have its bumps and challenges. Construction is just like that. But Tim always took responsibility when he needed to, and he never forgot to laugh. We had fun with him. There was one grumpy sub that needed a lot of massaging and we all had to have a sense of humor about the guy. But everything turned out great and we all smile whenever we think about that grumpy guy he even smiles when we see him. We recommend Tim and his First Lieutenant, Karen, very highly.

Having Tim McFadden as our builder was the best thing about our whole home building experience. He spent time with us so that he understood what we wanted and watched out for our interests throughout the building process. He steered us toward things that we may not have considered and away from other things that were not necessarily the best for us.
Tim came in on time and under budget with our home. We knew before we started building what everything was going to cost. If we decided on something different as we went along, we all agreed to it before the work was done. We always knew where we stood financially. We went over expenses with Tim every month. This kept us, the bank, the builder, the homeowner- all on the same page concerning where the money was going.
Tim is a quality builder. He looks for and secures subs that do solid work without being terribly expensive. He was a stickler for our home being well built. Any small problem that occurred since we moved in, he has come over right away to fix it for us.
Tim was very open to everything we wanted in our home. Sometimes he disagreed with the direction we wanted to go and would give us his reasons for wanting to do it a different way, but he did what we wanted unless it compromised the quality of the home in some way. He also supported us in our desire to finish the basement by ourselves. It was planned as an unfinished basement that we were going to finish after we moved in. Tim encouraged us to do the work on weekends and after hours so that we could keep up with the pace of the building and have a finished basement when the home was complete. He gave us suggestions for how to begin, gave us pointers on how to do the work efficiently, made sure the building materials were there for us, allowed us the use of his tools if we needed them and then watched over the quality of our work. It was a wonderful experience for our family to have an opportunity to participate in the building of our home.
Tim has become our friend though this process of building our home. I highly recommend Tim McFadden as a builder. He is a conscientious caring professional.
